About Verdi Santarém. Time to take it slow at our Portugal hotel
Slow food. Slow travel. Slow down. There’s a good reason why the slow movement has gathered pace in recent times. It’s taught us that it takes time to enjoy the good life. At Verdi Santarém, it takes no time at all.
The pace of life in the Ribatejo region is influenced by nature’s rhythms. From the slow meandering of the Tagus River, to the seasonal harvests of the olive tree, Cork Oaks and vineyards that have been yielding their bounty for centuries.
Just a 45-minute drive from Lisbon, Santarém proudly wears its title as the Gothic Capital of Portugal. Its skyline is graced with centuries-old churches and convents, a legacy that began in the 13th century when it became a cherished stop along the pilgrimage route between Lisbon and Fátima—most notably after the first apparition of the Virgin Mary in 1917. The city’s roots run deeper still: in 1147, Portugal’s first king, Dom Afonso Henriques, reclaimed Santarém from Moorish rule. Today, the remains of its castle and a striking statue of the king watch over the Tagus River from the “Jardim das Portas do Sol” (Garden of the Sun Gates), a serene public park where history, legend, and sweeping views meet.
Take your time to wander historic streets, or follow cycling trails to nearby towns.Or simply find a spot on a sun-drenched terrace in the late afternoon sun to sip the famous local wine and watch the world go by, like a true Santarenos.
