A Journey rough Maltese Vines
Malta’s Winemaking Legacy
Did you know that Malta’s winemaking history dates back
over 3,000 years? The art of viticulture on the island began
around 800 BC, thanks to the Phoenicians. They were followed by
the Greeks and Romans, who nurtured this Mediterranean crop.
Despite facing challenges during the Middle Ages and under British
rule, Malta’s spirit of winemaking endured and experienced a
renaissance after joining the European Union in 2004.
Indigenous Gems – Gellewza & Girgentina
One of Malta’s most intriguing aspects is its native grape varieties.
Gellewza, a red grape, produces light-bodied reds with notes
of prune and cherry. It’s also famously used in crafting
unique sparkling rosé wines—a delightful surprise in the Mediterranean region.
On the other hand, Girgentina is a white grape that yields fruity
and delicate wines with refreshing acidity. Often blended with
Chardonnay, it adds a distinctive character to Maltese whites.
So raise a glass to new experiences, and traditional local cuisine.
